Fun In the Summer Sun

It’s a beautiful, bright day and you’re headed for the beach or pool. You have your towels, sun lotion, refreshing drinks, and toys for the kids. That’s all great, but what about quality sunglasses for everyone in the family? They are, after all, every bit as important as that sun lotion you just bought or the vitamins and medications you take to protect other parts of your body.

We’ve all heard about reflections from the water, but, if the beach is your destination, did you know reflections from the sand there can also hurt unprotected eyes and be a contributing cause of what’s called photokeratitis, which is basically a sunburn of your eyes.

The benefits of sporting sunglasses at the beach or pool don’t just stop there, though. They also protect your skin…that super sensitive area around the eyes. These are just a few of the reasons everyone in the family should wear sunglasses. As the John Hopkins School of Medicine points out, “Wearing sunglasses as frequently as possible from a young age is key to minimizing…damage to the eye and surrounding tissues” (Source).

PROTECTION

All well-made sun wear offers protection, and there are lots of choices when it comes to lens materials in the sunglasses you choose. If you do a lot of yardwork, “Sunglasses that are made of a polycarbonate material can act like a safety glass, so they give the added benefit of protecting you from things flying in your eye while mowing the lawn or working in your yard,” explains Baylor College of Medicine ophthalmologist Masih Ahmed, M.D.(Source).

Just as polycarbonate is a super safety material, so polarized lenses offer great protection from the sun when you’re on or near the water.  According to the American Academy of Ophthalmology, polarized lenses have a special “chemical applied to them to filter light. The lenses block all the horizontal light waves bouncing off a smooth pond or a shiny car hood, for instance” (Source).

TIC TOC

While it’s best to consider your sunglasses a must-wear accessory and keep them on whenever you’re outside this summer, there are certain times of day when the sun’s intensity is most likely to affect your eye health and vision if you don’t wear them.

Most of us assume midday is the most critical time to sport your sunnies. In fact, early morning and late afternoon are just as important because those are the hours when the sun can actually do the most damage to your eyes.

All this is why it’s so important not just to wear sunnies, but to make sure the lenses in them are high quality and offer the most protection. One spectacle lens company, Shamir, based in sunny San Diego, is dedicated to providing you just that…the best!

So, by all means, pack that big beach ball and the oversized beach towel when you head for the water. Just make sure you’ve also included quality sunglasses for every member of the family.

Have fun. Be safe. And book your next appointment with us to ask about what Shamir sun lens options are best for you. Learn more here about the importance of sunglasses.

What is the Z87.1+ stamp and why do we care?

The national standard for safety glasses outlines a specific set of 3 test requirements that glasses and goggles must pass to be stamped as Z87.1+ certified. It’s good to have standards when it comes to protecting your eyes and interesting to know what goes into meeting these standards. Here is a brief summary of the four qualifying tests for Z87.1+ certification.

  • Test 1: Drop Ball Test – the most basic test is to drop a 1″ steel ball on the lens in the glasses from about 50 inches. To pass, no pieces of the lenses or frame may break free or fracture. This is a good indication of the overall strength of the glasses and meant to simulate an impact like a slipping tool that lands on a worker’s face or a lens collision with a stationary object. Passing this test will award the safety glasses design a Z87.1 certification.
  • 2: High Velocity Impact Test – a 1/4″ ball is fired on 20 specific points on the lens of safety glasses at a speed of 102 mph. In addition to the requirements listed in test 1, the eye on the “dummy” face cannot come in contact with the lens during any point of the impact. This test is supposed to mimic flying projectiles in work functions such as grinding, chipping or machining. Passing this test and the above awards the Z87.1+ certification.
From testresources.com, ANSI Z87.1+ application

All Wiley X ANSI-rated frames and lenses have passed the requirements for ANSI Z78.1+ safety glasses described above. An important aspect to the safety glasses design is the connection point of the frame and lenses, and this insertion must be done at the Wiley X laboratory. Updating a prescription in a safety frame should require this extra step to maintain the Z87.1 or Z87.1+ safety rating.

Slow down “birthday induced changes” – part 1

Happy Birthday to you…

Dr. McEathron often talks to patients about how to slow down age-related vision changes to their vision and eyes.  It’s his gentle way of bringing up the inevitable- along with the rest of our body- our eyes change as we age.  This blog post is part one of a discussion on how to slow down those birthday induced changes to your eye health and vision.

Here comes the sun…

There is much talk about protecting your skin from the sun- wearing sunscreen daily and link between UV exposure and skin cancer- but let’s talk about your eyes.  The tissue on and around our eyes is thinner and more sensitive than the rest of our body.  Eyes can sunburn with a great amount of sun exposure in a short time. This effect is called photokeratitis and can be very painful.  Symptoms can include watery eyes, burning and feeling like grit is in your eyes.  Thankfully it is typically short-lived (up to one week) and usually has no long term effects.

Long term UV exposure to our eyes can however have long term effects, including on our age-related vision changes. UV-A and UV-B light rays speed up the process of forming a cataract and increases the risk of macular degeneration.  Both of these conditions affect your vision – cataracts make the world seem cloudy and blurry- which cannot be corrected with glasses, only surgery.  Macular degeneration is a loss of the central vision- a blind spot that is irreversible.  As previously mentioned- the skin around the eyes and tissue on the eyes is very thin. Consequently, excessive sun exposure without proper protection can lead to skin cancer and premature signs of aging, therefore furthering age-related vision changes.

Sunglasses protect your eyes today and tomorrow!

sunglasses to help with age-related vision changesWhenever you spend time outside, there are easy ways to protect your eyes from the sun to help reduce the risks discussed above.  Wearing quality sunglasses that provide 100% protection against UV-A and UV-B radiation is the first step.  Transition lenses (that darken in sunlight) also provide 100% UV protection.  Wrap-around sunglasses provide the most amount of protection.  Don’t forget about protecting children and young adults eyes too!  They typically spend the most time in the sun. Therefore, implementing the sunglasses habit can make the biggest impact to their long term eye health. It does this by reducing the amount of accumulative hours of UV exposure!

In addition to sun protection- yearly eye exams to monitor eye health in all of these risk areas are very important.  If you have any questions or concerns- please contact us for an appointment today or stop in to talk with one of our opticians about sunwear!
