Heather LeClaire, Optometrist and Owner

•If you could instantly become an expert in one hobby or skill, what would it be? Shuffling

•You just won a lifetime supply of one specific, non-essential item (aka not money or gas). What are you stocking up on? Tissues

•What is your favorite way to spend a perfect, rainy weekend afternoon in town? Getting a coffee with friends and reading a good book.

•What is your favorite part about working with the team every day? Being surrounded by creative and wonderful co-workers.  Different people and ideas coming together for a common purpose.
Lydia Pan, Optometrist

•If you could instantly become an expert in one hobby or skill, what would it be? Playing guitar

•What is your go-to comfort food, and where is the best place in town to get it? Pad kee mao from Supon’s

•You just won a lifetime supply of one specific, non-essential item (aka not money or gas). What are you stocking up on? Mallard’s ice cream!

What is your favorite part about working with the team every day? My favorite part about working with the team everyday is being around a fun group of people who love what they do and truly care 🙂

Calana Mansell, Office Manager

What is your go-to comfort food, and where is the best place in town to get it? TexMex! The best spot in town is El Gitano.

You just won a lifetime supply of one specific, non-essential item (aka not money or gas). What are you stocking up on? Albanese gummy bears (except someone else can have all the grapefruit flavored ones) OR some kind of fresh dill pickle (NO bread & butter or sweet pickles 🙅🏻‍♀️)

In an alternate universe, what is your dream job? Professional cat snuggler.

What is your favorite local trail, park, or outdoor escape? Anywhere you can access via Chuckanut! Even just a nice Sunday drive down Chuckanut hits the spot 🌞

If you could give one piece of advice to someone picking out new glasses or trying contacts for the first time, what would it be? Putting in contact lenses for the first time is a lot harder than it looks! Don’t stress if it’s not happening right away. Our eye reflexes and our lashes are really dang good at doing their job of keeping stuff out. The more you practice, the easier it gets!

Heather Froehner, Optician

In an alternate universe, what is your dream job? I’d be a jingle writer. I make up songs about random things anyway, why not get paid for it?

If you could instantly become an expert in one hobby or skill, what would it be? Baking. I love making delicious treats for my friends and family, but some things are incredibly difficult to master.

If your life had a theme song or signature sound effect, what would it be? Blue Skies by Ella Fitzgerald

You just won a lifetime supply of one specific, non-essential item (aka not money or gas). What are you stocking up on? Wine, of course!

•If you’re introducing a friend to the area for the first time, what is the one “must-visit” spot you take them to? Whatcom Falls Park. Whether you’re looking to walk the trails or just sit and relax, it’s such a beautiful place.

What is a small, everyday moment at work that always puts a smile on your face? I love when someone picks up their new glasses and immediately says “Wow, I can see!” It reminds me why I do this.

If you could give one piece of advice to someone picking out new glasses or trying contacts for the first time, what would it be? Don’t be afraid to try something “weird”. Frames that look crazy on the board can look amazing on the right face.

Jordan Cochran-Johnson, Optician Apprentice

If you could instantly become an expert in one hobby or skill, what would it be? I would want to be an expert in cosmetic surgery.

What is your go-to comfort food, and where is the best place in town to get it? My favorite go-to comfort food is flank steak and a mojito at Anthony’s Hearthfire Grill. So good.

If you were a specific type of weather, what would you be and why? If I were a specific type of weather I would be 85 degree summer heat for all to enjoy.

What is your favorite local trail, park, or outdoor escape? Zuanich Park.

What is a small, everyday moment at work that always puts a smile on your face? When a patient is obsessed with their new frames of course!

Nikkii Bourne, Receptionist

In an alternate universe, what is your dream job? Professional napper

If you could instantly become an expert in one hobby or skill, what would it be? Brain surgery. I think it would be cool to see what the inside of a brain looks like.

What is your go-to comfort food, and where is the best place in town to get it? Thai food. Thai Mason by Trader Joes is the best in town!

What is your favorite way to spend a perfect, rainy weekend afternoon in town? At home, on the couch either reading, or watching a scary movie in comfy PJ’s

What is a small, everyday moment at work that always puts a smile on your face? When patients pick up their new frames and love how they look in them.

If you could give one piece of advice to someone picking out new glasses or trying contacts for the first time, what would it be? When picking out new glasses, branch out and try on frames you wouldn’t normally go for. You never know what will look good on you till you try!

Rory Hogan, Billing Specialist

What is your go-to comfort food, and where is the best place in town to get it? My go-to comfort food is a delicious egg roll – I think the best in town is a tie between Hana & Oishii, but I’m always open to suggestions.

If your life had a theme song or signature sound effect, what would it be? My theme song is Threshold Apprehension by Black Francis, no question.

If you were a specific type of weather, what would you be and why? If I were any sort of weather, I would be a light evening rain after an otherwise sunny summer day.

If you’re introducing a friend to the area for the first time, what is the one “must-visit” spot you take them to? If they’re down for a medium adventure, I’d take them to the Oyster Dome – it’s good for getting the blood pumping and it ends with a stellar vista.

What is a small, everyday moment at work that always puts a smile on your face? It’s always easy to smile when I’m outside working with the plants on the property, be it cursing at the weeds or whispering to the beauties – there’s something very calming in caring for plant life, and I’m proud of the work I’ve put in.
Shannon Lloyd, Optician Apprentice

In an alternate universe, what is your dream job? Professional Cryptid Relations Manager.
My job would be traveling the Pacific Northwest, mediating disputes between Bigfoot, irritated forest spirits, and unsuspecting hikers. I’d spend my days filing incident reports like, “Sasquatch stole three Costco muffins and a kayak. The situation was resolved after negotiation and snacks.” I would also host mandatory communication workshops for mothmen and teach dragons that setting things on fire is not a valid conflict-resolution strategy.

What is your favorite way to spend a perfect, rainy weekend afternoon in town? Rainy days are my favorite excuse to slow down. My perfect afternoon starts with a giant cup of coffee, a stack of books I’ll probably never make it through, and absolutely nowhere I need to be. If my husband is home, we’re likely laughing over something ridiculous, playing VR games (or some game), and watching anime. If friends stop by, even better—we’ll end up making shrinky dinks, talking for hours, and somehow solving none of the world’s problems while discussing all of them.
Somewhere in the middle of all that, I’ll usually steal a few hours to work on one of my books. Writing has become one of my favorite ways to make sense of the world—part therapy, part archaeology.

What is a small, everyday moment at work that always puts a smile on your face? My favorite moment is when a patient puts on their new glasses for the first time and suddenly realizes what they’ve been missing.
There’s always this brief pause.
Then their face lights up.
They look across the room and say something like, “Wow, I can actually read that!”
It’s such a small thing, but it never gets old. In a world that can feel complicated and heavy, helping someone literally see things more clearly is a pretty wonderful way to spend a day. And unlike my three cats, most patients at least pretend I’m in charge. 😄
